Located on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, it is the home of the provincial government, the largest city in Canada and the fifth largest city in North America. As of the 2006 Canadian census, the city's population is 2,503,281 and its census metropolitan area (CMA) has a population of 5,113,149.[1] The 2006 census population of the old, pre-amalgamated City of Toronto is 680,995.
